Carbon offset
Starting in 2012, SCCS Cambridge began investing a share of delegates' registration fees in carbon offset projects to reduce the environmental impact of the conference.
2012-13
SCCS supported a project in the Baviaanskloof Mega-Reserve, South Africa, involving the planting of the carbon-thirsty spekboom (Portulacaria afra) to restore an area degraded by decades of overstocking with goats.
2014-16
SCCS supported a similar project in the Little Karoo, part of the Gouritz Cluster Biosphere Reserve in South Africa. The restoration work not only soaked up CO2 but recreated valuable wildlife habitat and provided badly needed jobs for a poor rural community.
2017-19 and 2022-25
SCCS has supported the Gola Rainforest Conservation Project in Sierra Leone.
